In 1977, the founding sisters of Lambda Phi created a unique type of sorority. They planned a New Member Program that focused on developing close, true friendships instead of one that is meant to embarrass or “initiate.” The New Member Education process allows new girls to get to know the sisters and grow close to each other. Today, Lambda Phi continues to uphold the same traditions and stays away from establishing the stereotypical sorority environment. As a local sorority, Lambda Phi contributes to the strength and closeness of all members, active and alumni. Together we share common bonds of trust, friendship, and sisterhood to keep a closely knit bond with each other and with our community.
Lambda Phi encourages and fosters academic excellence for all its members. We strive to maintain high academic standards and challenge every sister to live up to her highest potential, in and out of the classroom. We encourage involvement in academic activities within St. John’s University including Gamma Sigma Alpha, Kappa Delta Pi, Beta Alpha Psi, and Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Societies. Sisters are also involved in the Ozanam Scholars Program and Dean’s Scholars here at St. John’s. We proudly celebrate one of the highest GPAs in Greek Life. Sisters of Lambda Phi benefit from: study groups, textbook sharing, improving leadership qualities & social skills, networking with Alumni, and tutoring.
Our Sorority focuses on creating and maintaining the strong bonds of SISTERHOOD. As “Lambda Ladies,” no matter where we are, we stand out as the sophisticated and mature ladies that we pride ourselves in being. Being a part of a sorority is something that cannot be compared to anything else. Sisterhood is having a unique and amazing bond. A sisterhood is based on intangible principles with amazing women. The friendships you make continue to grow stronger with age and will truly last you a lifetime. We take vacations together to places such as Las Vegas, Italy, Bahamas, St. Maarten, Disney World, Myrtle Beach, South Beach, Maine, Cancun, Acapulco, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Atlantic City, the Jersey shore, Jamaica, and ski trips to Pennsylvania. Other fun sisterhood activities include our annual Lambda Phi Sleepovers, February's Sweetheart Formal, Mixers with Fraternities & Sororities and other St. John's organizations, Sisterhood nights in the City, movie nights, our annual Christmas Party & Thanksgiving Dinner, Halloween Semi-Formal, annual Alumni Picnic, pool parties, & trips to Jones Beach.
For Lambda Phi, community service is one of the most gratifying aspects of Sorority Life. The satisfaction and pride which comes with our involvement and volunteerism helps build our moral character as well as connection to one another and the community. The sisters of Lambda Phi take great pride in the community service we do and its importance. Giving back to the community is very vital to us and throughout the year, we actively participate in wide ranges of community service including Breast Cancer, Diabetes, Multiple Sclerosis and Autism benefits, the Walk for the Homeless, blood drives on campus, fundraisers such as Valentines Day flower sale & Easter bake sale to help various foundations, sponsoring a child from a 3rd world country, dog walking, New York Cares Day & Hands on New York Day, spending time with the residents at St. Mary's Hospital for Children and the Chapin Home for the Aging, support of Morry’s Camp, and Katie Shirley's Closet. One of our alumni is the President of FSMA (Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy) for the Greater New York Chapter. We annually participate in the walk for FSMA, and she visits St. John's campus to educate students about SMA.
Lambda Phi Sorority provides a network of support, a strong academic liaison and close & everlasting friendships. We encourage personal development, social skills, leadership, and academic excellence. We instill a sense of responsibility to campus and community, an appreciation of diversities of all cultures, religions, and socio-economic statuses, as well as the importance of characteristics such as friendship, loyalty, respect, selfless service, honor, courage, confidence, integrity, and strong values.
The sisters of Lambda Phi are joined together in an organization which embraces and celebrates each individual for her differences and admirable characteristics. Each Lady is a member of a strong family that is full of love, encouragement, and understanding. Lambda Phi promotes an environment that gives each sister the support and opportunity to excel and succeed in all aspects of life, inspiring sisters to reach full potential.
