“Once a Phi Sigma Sigma…Always a Phi Sigma Sigma.”
History: Phi Sigma Sigma was founded on November 26, 1913 at Hunter College in New York. Our founders wanted to create a sorority that would promote open membership to all women. There are over 125 chapters all over the U.S. and Canada helping women become strong leaders. Our chapter, Epsilon Omicron, was founded on May 11, 1988 at SJU. Our goals are Service, Leadership, Scholarship, and Sisterhood.
Service: is our contribution to St. John's, our community, and the world. Our chapter actively participates in several fund-raising and charity events such as Aids Awareness Week, St. Mary's Children Hospital, Race to Deliver, St. John the Baptist Project, Adopt a Grandparent, Ronald McDonald House, Walk for the Homeless, and GNP Gala Ball for Cancer Research. Every year we hold our annual Rock-a-thon to raise money for the National Kidney Foundation, our Philanthropy. We also sponsor bake sales, raffles, candy grams, chocolate sales, and our annual Greek God and Goddess contest in the fall. Due to our hard work and service we are very proud to say we were honored as the "Organization of the Year" for 1997-1998, 1998-1999, and 2001-2002, 2005-2006 academic school years.
Leadership: is the index of our true commitment to our futures and ourselves. On a national level, every summer Phi Sig sisters from all chapters attend conventions and leadership conferences to improve leadership skills. At this time, scholarships are granted to sisters who have made outstanding achievements. On a local level, we participate in campus life and organizations such as Student Government, Earth Club, New Student Orientation Leaders, The Torch, Cheerleading, Business Society, Golden Key Honor Society, Economic and Finance Society, Order of Omega Honor Society, Italian Cultural Society, Pre-Law Society, Criminal Justice Association, Watson Pre-Health Honor Society, Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Kappa Delta Pi International Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Alpha Honor Society, and much, much more!
Scholarship: Academic excellence is the first priority of Phi Sig sisters. Through Phi Sigma Sigma, educational grants and scholarship programs are awarded annually to both collegiate and graduate members to help our sisters aim high. Phi Sig helps every sister grow and challenges each to live up to her highest academic potential.
Sisterhood: It is the unique bond that brings the true rewards of sorority affiliation for a lifetime to come. As Phi Sig's, we always pull together and stand strong whether it is at our annual Thanksgiving Dinner, Christmas Dinner, Red Rose Banquet, Founder's Day celebration, Community Breakfast, sister nights, winning First Place in GREEK WEEK in 1999 and Lip Sync in 2006 or winning Outstanding Sorority in 2002. Each year, we also plan Spring Break trips to Cancun, Acapulco, South Beach, South Padre Island, or Las Vegas. Within our wall you will find many sisters from all walks of life who have come together to share a common bond of sisterhood. This is a bond that will last a lifetime.
